The Okinawan Grandmaster

Leading this endeavor is Hanshi Tetsuo Takamiyagi, a grandmaster from Okinawa, Japan, and the International Director of the Okinawa Shorin Ryu Karate Do Udun Ti Kobujutsu Association. Born on December 17, 1942, Hanshi Takamiyagi’s martial journey began in Okinawa, where he formed close relationships with martial arts legends such as Seikichi Uehara, Eizo Shimabuku, Taira Ryo Shu, and Toma Seiki. Learning directly from these masters, he dedicated himself to preserving their teachings. He holds the prestigious rank of 10th Dan and is widely respected for his mastery across multiple disciplines. His deep association with Seikichi Uehara, the renowned master of Motobu Udun-ti, played a significant role in shaping his understanding of this traditional Okinawan royal hand technique.

Hanshi Takamiyagi has traveled extensively across the Americas, Europe, and Asia to promote his unique training system, which blends hard and soft martial arts techniques. His approach not only teaches practical self-defense but also enhances physical fitness and overall well-being. Beyond martial arts, he serves as a faculty member specializing in speed reading and is known as a professional motivator. His teaching philosophy emphasizes using gravity and flowing movements to achieve efficiency and adaptability. As practitioners mature, he advocates transitioning to softer techniques to ensure longevity in their practice. Recognizing the dedication of Master K.P. Ravindran, Hanshi Takamiyagi entrusted him with the global leadership of his association—strengthening Indo-Japanese martial arts ties. His connection to India, rooted in childhood dreams and studies of the ancient Bubishi text and its links to Indian Marma Sastra, has led to collaborations that bridge Okinawan and Indian martial traditions, symbolizing unity, tradition, and spiritual harmony.

The Indian Torchbearer of Okinawan Tradition

A torchbearer of Hanshi Takamiyagi’s legacy in India, Hanshi K.P. Ravindran serves as the Chief Instructor of the Okinawa Shorin Ryu Karate Do Udun Ti Kobujutsu Association. Born in Kerala on February 16, 1951, he began his martial arts journey in 1977 under Sensei P. Kuppu Swamy, a Malaysian karate expert who was among the first to introduce the Shorin Ryu style in India. Driven by a deep commitment to authenticity, Hanshi Ravindran pursued advanced training in Okinawa under legendary grandmasters and eventually attained the prestigious 10th Dan rank. He is among the first Indian masters to be awarded a Red Belt through traditional Okinawan methods and remains the first Indian officially authorized by an Okinawan grandmaster to represent and teach traditional Okinawan martial arts in India.

Hanshi Ravindran’s expertise goes far beyond karate. He has studied Indian martial and healing traditions including Kalaripayattu, Siddha medicine, and Marma therapy, with guidance from experts like Dr. Kalathar and Varma master Dr. Maanikavasakam of Tamil Nadu. This unique blend of Okinawan and Indian wisdom has shaped his holistic approach to martial arts training. Internationally, he has served as a respected referee and coach at world karate championships and led the Indian team on multiple occasions. With over 2,000 black belts trained under his mentorship, Hanshi Ravindran stands as a guiding force for martial artists across India and beyond.
